Hospice of Michigan Receives $10,000 Grant to Support Veterans at End-of-Life

Senior Men’s Club of Birmingham Foundation to help fund We Honor Veterans program in Oakland, Macomb and Wayne counties

BIRMINGHAM, Mich. (April 15, 2024)Hospice of Michigan recently received a $10,000 grant from the Senior Men’s Club of Birmingham Foundation to support the not-for-profit’s We Honor Veterans program in Oakland, Macomb and Wayne counties.

Hospice of Michigan is a Level IV partner in the We Honor Veterans program, a partnership between the Veterans Administration and the National Hospice & Palliative Care Organization. We Honor Veterans is designed to address the unique needs of veterans at end-of-life. Throughout the year, Hospice of Michigan organizes special activities and events and partners with community organizations to honor veterans. These activities include pinning ceremonies and award/medal presentations, or other last wishes of the veteran patient. Pinning ceremonies are often done at the bedside in the patient’s home, senior living facilities, nursing homes and assisted living facilities. Veterans are presented with a special Hospice of Michigan veteran pin and a personalized certificate recognizing their service.

In 2023, Hospice of Michigan served nearly 500 patients in Oakland, Macomb and Wayne counties with 35% of those patients being veterans. The grant will allow the not-for-profit to conduct pinning ceremonies and recognize southeast Michigan patients who have served in the armed forces.

“One in four dying Americans is a veteran. Veterans face unique challenges as a result of their military service. By recognizing the unique needs of veterans who are coping with advanced illness, Hospice of Michigan can guide these men and women toward a more peaceful ending,” said Elaine Taule, director of philanthropy at Hospice of Michigan. “We are grateful for the support provided by the Senior Men’s Club of Birmingham Foundation.”
