Legacy Giving

JUNE B. HAMERSMA LEGACY SOCIETY

Since 1980, June B. Hamersma has been one of Hospice of Michigan’s most devoted supporters. Recognizing the need to ensure that quality hospice care is available to all who need it, she established the Hospice of Michigan Foundation in June 1994, serving as its first board president. One of the fundamental principles of the Hospice of Michigan Foundation that June instituted was an intense focus on community support. Thus, the Hospice of Michigan Foundation proudly ensures that money raised in a specific community can be directed to stay in that community, providing friends and neighbors support when they need it.

Making a legacy gift to the Hospice of Michigan Foundation is a great way to ensure income for your beneficiary, achieve tax benefits and help make certain that quality hospice care is available to our community for the future. Regardless of the amount, a legacy gift has the power to change lives for generations to come.

What to consider
Hospice of Michigan would be honored to be included in your long-range plans. When thoughtfully considered, a legacy gift can enhance your own financial well-being while making a difference for those facing a terminal illness. There are a range of options that can provide immediate benefits, such as increasing current income or providing additional retirement income while reducing income and estate taxes. Some types of gifts can virtually eliminate estate taxes, while others can greatly reduce the amount of tax you are responsible for during your lifetime.

Here are some of the ways you can create a legacy*

IF YOUR GOAL IS TO…
THEN YOU CAN…
YOUR BENEFITS ARE…

Bequest

Defer a gift until after your lifetime

Put a bequest in your will (cash, property, or share of the estate)

A gift that is fully exempt from estate tax

Gift of Retirement Assets

Avoid being taxed—twice—on an IRA or other employee benefit plan

Name Hospice of Michigan as the beneficiary of the remainder of the assets after your lifetime

The ability to leave your family other assets that carry less tax liability

Gift of Life Insurance

Make a large gift with little cost to yourself

Contribute a life insurance policy that you no longer need

Currently and possibly future tax deductions

Gift of Real Estate

Avoid capital gains tax on the sale of a home or other real estate

Donate the property to Hospice of Michigan

An income tax deduction, plus reduction or elimination of capital gains tax

*These are some of the ways you can give. Please consult your financial advisor for the best way to give for your unique situation.

Gift planning possibilities:

  • A gift of appreciated assets, such as stocks or securities
  • A bequest to the Hospice of Michigan Foundation in your existing will or living trust
  • Naming the Hospice of Michigan Foundation as a beneficiary on your life insurance policy, retirement plan, or IRA
  • A donor-advised fund with your community foundation
  • A charitable remainder trust, which may benefit you, your family and friends, and the Hospice of Michigan Foundation

Bequest designations in a will, revocable trust, insurance policy or retirement plan are generally revocable and may be changed during your lifetime; however, certain trusts are irrevocable, and funds may not be returned once transferred.

For more information about including Hospice of Michigan in your estate plan or becoming a member of the June B. Hamersma Legacy Society, please call Stephanie Le, Director of Major and Legacy Gifts  at 248.346.4253 or email sle@hom.org.

A Legacy Gift is one of the most meaningful ways to support a charity that is dear to your heart. A Legacy Gift ensures that your charity will continue in perpetuity. Winston Churchill said it best, “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.”
