GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (Sept. 3, 2019) – Hospice of Michigan, the state’s original and largest not-for-profit hospice provider, is set to continue its monthly luncheons for men going through the grieving process after losing a loved one. The sessions will begin Wednesday, Sept. 11 from 1 until 2:30 p.m. at the American Legion 459, 658 Michigan St. NE in Grand Rapids. Additional sessions will be held Wednesdays, Oct. 9, Nov. 13 and Dec. 11. While the meetings are free, attendees are asked to cover the cost of their meal and beverage.
Men grieve differently from women, and the differences will be explored with discussion led by Hospice of Michigan grief support specialists such as moderator Larry Duggan, a Hospice of Michigan volunteer for the past 13 years. When it comes to dealing with the death of a loved one, men often suppress their grief in light of cultural expectations that they remain strong and in control. Suppressing sadness over the loss of a loved one, however, can have a long-lasting, and even permanent, negative impact on a man’s emotional health.
Hospice of Michigan’s grief support programs are open to everyone in the community dealing with the loss of a loved one, regardless of whether they received care from HOM. The not-for-profit’s ‘Men in Grief’ support group is among the many free grief support services Hospice of Michigan offers, providing a supportive environment for those struggling to cope with the loss of a loved one.
